NEWS FROM THE ITHACA COMMUNITY CHORUS
August 6, 2007

August 1, 2007

Dear Singer,

I hope you’re relishing this beautiful summer and that you’re ready to begin thinking about enjoying another year of great choral music.

Last season the chorus gave two wonderful concerts, Schubert’s Mass in A-Flat and Orff’s Carmina Burana, after which the audience leapt to their feet. This season we continue with two exciting programs, both bridging the British Isles and the European continent. On January 12 we will perform Handel’s glorious Coronation Anthems (in English) and Haydn’s exquisite Lord Nelson Mass (in Latin), both with full orchestra. Haydn enjoyed a strong connection with the English people, making several triumphant visits to London. On May 3 we will present one of the most magnificent oratorios of all time, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, written and conducted by the composer for the 1846 Birmingham Festival in England. It will be sung in English with full orchestra.

In our first concert the Chamber Singers will span the Atlantic with a pair of gorgeous contemporary works, Seek Him that Maketh the Seven Stars by British composer Jonathan Dove and O Magnum Mysterium by American composer Morten Lauridsen. If you are interested in singing with the Chamber Singers, please stay for a brief audition after the second chorus rehearsal, September 19. If you will be absent that night, please let me know ahead of time.

I’m looking forward to a semester of joyous music making and to seeing you on September 12.

Gerald
