L'shanah tovah (For a good year),
>
> It has come to our attention
that Wednesday, September 12th marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish
holy day celebrating the new year. We apologize for coinciding Chorus's first
rehearsal with such an important day! Choosing the 12th for first rehearsal was
based on planning the proper number of rehearsals before a concert, and we should
have been aware enough to address the holiday sooner, so we apologize deeply.
>
>
Our Jewish members are of course encouraged to participate in their own observances,
and are not required to attend the first rehearsal. Registration takes place during
the first three rehearsals, so just come a bit early the following week to pick
up your music, etc. However, please note that as with Christian holy days such
as Ash Wednesday, which typically receives a lower turnout (including by Gerald
because of his duties in Elmira), the missed rehearsal will still count toward
the three absences allowed during the semester.
>
> For those who
will be at rehearsal, there will be a special Rosh Hashanah treat so that members
of all spiritual and non-spiritual backgrounds can acknowledge this special time
of year. Along with other snacks supplied for break-time by board/ steering members,
we will have apples and honey, a symbol of the wish for a sweet new year. This
will serve two purposes, encouraging us to both acknowledge and celebrate the
Jewish new year, as well as our own as an organization. Here's to a very sweet
new year, especially to those who we will be missing at first rehearsal. Happy
Rosh Hashana.
