THE LIFE OF MARY, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, AT 7 PM
WHAT: Paul Hindemith’s “Das Marienleben” in song and dance
WHEN: Wednesday, December 19 at 7 PM
WHERE: Grace Episcopal Church, 375 West Church at Davis, Elmira, NY

Soprano Judith Kellock, pianist Kirk Severtson, and dancer Risa Fujita will perform Paul Hindemith’s setting of Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem “Das Marienleben."

Hindemith’s piece for soprano and piano is a passionate musical portrait of the life of Mary, emphasizing the love, perils, and grief of a mortal woman and mother. The idea to add dance to the musical performance led to a collaboration between two faculty members at Cornell University: soprano Judith Kellock, of the Department of Music, and choreographer Joyce Morgenroth, of the Department of Theatre, Film, and Dance. Kirk Severtson, on the faculty of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, will be the pianist, and Risa Fujita will dance the role of Mary. Admission is free and all are cordially invited.
