FINGER LAKES WOMEN'S CHORALE FALL CONCERT

The Finger Lakes Women's Chorale will present a concert titled "Water Under Snow is Weary", on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 6:30 pm, Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca and Sunday, December 6, 2009 at 4:00 pm, Morgan Opera House in Aurora.

"These are all pieces I found when I was researching last fall's concert repertoire," says Finger Lakes Women's Chorale director, Doreen Alsen. "I absolutely fell in love with the title piece, 'Water Under Snow is Weary' by Finnish composer Harri Wessman. It's a beautiful piece and leads us into the rest of the songs in the concert, which include Vincent Persichetti's 'Winter Cantata,' Joan Szymko's 'The Singing Place,' Stephen Hatfield's 'La Lluvia,' and Samuel Barber's 'Rain Has Fallen.' Water is such a powerful symbol for so many things. Before we are born our whole world is water a place where we can grow. Through all our lives, we are subject to the ebb and flow of the water, with the tides, the phases of the moon, the changing of the seasons. From mist to ice, our artistic lives as well as our physical lives. The pieces in this concert, especially Szymko's 'The Singing Place' explore our deepest connections to water."

Tickets for both concerts can be purchased at the door: $10 general, $7 seniors and students. For more info about the Finger Lakes Women's Chorale: http://www.flwcithaca.com

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

Dear Singer,

The music for the coming year is among the most exciting in the history of the chorus. This fall we will be singing George Frederick Handel's magnificent oratorio Israel in Egypt (concert January 16).

Israel in Egypt (the Exodus story) is unique among Handel's oratorios, with many choruses (many for double chorus) and few solo movements. They range from poignant to jubilant, and become especially fun when singing about the plagues of Egypt. This work will be sung in English with full orchestra. The Chamber Singers will sing some of both the choruses and the solos. Auditions will be held after the second chorus rehearsal, and the group will rehearse immediately after chorus from 9-10 p.m. starting the third week. Anyone interested who can't be there for auditions should contact me in advance.

I can't wait to begin this year of glorious music. See you on September 9!

Gerald
